Bathroom Remodel Quotes -- Comparing "Apples to Apples"

Updated: Sep 13

Effectively evaluating contractor quotes is an essential part of your bathroom remodel. This process can give you a clearer picture of your budget. It's also important to understand your project's complexity and why quotes may differ.

Quotes -- Estimates -- Bids

You may have a mixture of quotes, estimates and bids from bathroom contractors. First, let's review the terms of each:

  • Estimate: A rough idea of how much the job will cost.

  • Bids/Quotes: Outline all aspects of the project and become a contract once they are signed.

What to expect with a Quote:

  • Clear details of the project

  • All project details included with total price

  • All costs that are a part of your project including labor

  • Good contractors to be sure their information is direct, transparent and in an organized document

Quote Variancies:

  • Materials and fixtures can drastically vary in price. A price jump may be due to material and labor. Research the lifespan and other pros and cons that come with different bathroom materials to see what is best for your home and budget. A recent blog post, Shower Wall Slabs vs. Shower Tiles may be helpful.

  • Are warranties and customer satisfaction guarantees included?

  • Discuss all fees associated with your project and confirm that they are in writing.

Be sure a Contractor Checks all of these boxes:

  • Contractor licensing

  • Proper insurance

  • Review website and read reviews

  • Physical address not just a P.O. box

Questions to ask Contractors:

  • How long have you been in business?

  • What type of projects are you experienced in?

  • Will any subcontractors be used during this project?

  • What is a realistic start date and end date for the project?

  • How do you prefer to arrange a payment schedule?

  • Who will dispose of old materials?

  • Is the quote/estimate a fixed price? *Be sure to get a fixed price before signing anything.

  • Will you clean up after the project is completed?

For your convenience we've included a 1-page Bathroom Remodel Contractor Comparison tool. This should help ease the comparison process.
